In the first part of this 2 part series, we discussed what business looks like from the kitchen table.
If you can run a house, you can run a business. Remember, the challenge isn’t capability. What might be better off managed by a third-party or supported with a technology solution? Let’s talk about you and how you apply a kitchen-table decision to the boardroom.
Who are you? What do you want ? What do you know?
Your Skills & What You Know
As a business leader, what does all of this mean to you?It means that you are not starting from scratch because you already have the experience!
Your Goals & What You Want
Are you pursuing more freedom, more income, more control, or maybe a legacy to pass on?
Check out the kitchen table checklist ➡
In as few words as possible, write down what you want. This is the beginning of your business plan or an initial guide to your operations.
- What problem do I want to solve?
- Who specifically do I want to help?
- What do I want to be known for?
- What am I willing to do that others won’t?
- What am I not willing to do?
- What does “success” mean in year 1, 2, 3?
What You Are & What You Embody
You know what matters, and your vision / values are not just soft skills but the foundation for how you will operate and run your business. And when a business leader doesn’t know something, they do what they’ve always done at home.
You already know how to carry responsibility, solve problems, make plans, keep plugging away in the face of adversity, and still support those around you when you have to get things done. So…
You learn.
You ask.
You try.
You adjust.
You keep going.
At some point you may question your ability or willingness to take risks but readiness is not a feeling. It’s a decision. You have been practicing leadership in everyday life, so let’s bring it back.
Like running a home, your business ambitions can succeed when you’re prepared with an honest understanding of the challenges you will face and your capacities. Permits and licenses are essential because they impact whether your business can open, operate, or grow. One more time, ask yourself, “Does this belong on your leadership plate?”
Your challenge won’t be capability. It’s about managing your time and attention when you business might be operating in multiple jurisdictions with fluctuating regulatory requirements.
